Herein, ultraviolet B (UVB) persistent luminescence phosphors containing SrAl12O19: Ce3+, Sc3+ nanoparticles were reported. Thermoluminescence (TL) spectrum analysis reveals that the shallow trap induced by Sc3+ co-doping plays an important role in photoluminescence persistent luminescence (PersL) development, while the deep trap dominates the generation of optical stimulated luminescence (OSL). Owing the appearance of deep trap, the OSL is observed under light (700 nm - 900 nm) excitation. UVB luminescence exerts good bactericidal effects on pathogenic bacteria involved in the process of food spoilage. Thus, the smart window with SrAl12O19: Ce3+, Sc3+/PDMS produces UVB PersL to efficiently inactivate Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the presence of the smart window delays the critical point of pork decay, and greatly reduces the time of pork spoilage. It maximizes the convenience of eradicating bacteria and preserving food, thus offering a fresh perspective on the use of UV light for food sterilization and preservation.

Constructing full-color circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with switchable handedness in the solid state is an appealing yet considerably challenging task, especially for supramolecular polymer films assembled from homochiral monomers. Herein, supramolecular polymers with full-color CPL and inverted handedness are realized through the coassembly of a homochiral cholesterol derivative (PVPCC), metal ions (Zn2+), and achiral fluorescent dyes. The obtained coassembled systems show anion-directed supramolecular chirality inversion by exchanging the anions of NO3-, ClO4-, BF4-, and Cl-. For instance, the negative CD and right-handed CPL are detected in the PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2 aggregates, which convert into positive CD and left-handed CPL after introducing Cl-, corresponding to the transformation from nanorods to nanofibers. Furthermore, the tunable CPL color and handedness inversion of the coassembly system of PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2 and achiral fluorescent dyes can be established by alternately changing the assembling temperature of 298 and 273 K. Importantly, the full-color CPL polymeric materials are then constructed by doping the PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2/dyes complexes into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film, which maintains the handedness inversion and shows the enhanced CPL performance. The work not only deepens the understanding of chirality inversion in supramolecular chemistry but also helps to construct full-color CPL materials with switchable handedness from homochiral building blocks in materials science.

Molecular emitters with multi-emissive properties are in high demand in numerous fields, while these properties basically depend on specific molecular conformation and packing. For amorphous systems, special molecular arrangement is unnecessary, but it remains challenging to achieve such luminescent behaviors. Herein, we present a general strategy that takes advantage of molecular rigidity and S1 -T1 energy gap balance for emitter design, which enables fluorescence-phosphorescence dual-emission properties in various solid forms, whether crystalline or amorphous. Subsequently, the amorphism of the emitters based polymethyl methacrylate films endowed an in situ regulation of the dual-emissive characteristics. With the ratiometric regulation of phosphorescence by external stimuli and stable fluorescence as internal reference, highly controllable luminescent color tuning (yellow to blue including white emission) was achieved. There properties together with a persistent luminous behavior is of benefit for an irreplaceable set of optical information combination, featuring an ultrahigh-security anti-counterfeiting ability. Our research introduces a concept of eliminating the crystal-form and molecular-conformational dependence of complex luminescent properties through emitter molecular design. This has profound implications for the development of functional materials.

Bougainvillea is popular in ornamental horticulture for its colorful bracts and excellent adaptability, but the complex genetic relationship among this genus is fuzzy due to limited genomic data. To reveal more genomic resources of Bougainvillea, we sequenced and assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequences of Bougainvillea spectabilis 'Splendens'. The cp genome size was 154,869 bp in length, containing 86 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNAs, and eight rRNAs. Cp genome comparison across 12 Bougainvillea species (B. spectabilis, B. glabra, B. peruviana, B. arborea, B. praecox, B. stipitata, B. campanulata, B. berberidifolia, B. infesta, B. modesta, B. spinosa, and B. pachyphylla) revealed five mutational hotspots. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that B. spectabilis published previously and B. glabra clustered into one subclade as two distinct groups, sister to the subclade of B. spectabilis 'Splendens'. We considered the phylogeny relationships between B. spectabilis and B. glabra to be controversial. Based on two hypervariable regions and three common plastid regions, we developed five molecular markers for species identification in Bougainvillea and applied them to classify 53 ornamental Bougainvillea cultivars. This study provides a valuable genetic resource for Bougainvillea breeding and offers effective molecular markers to distinguish the representative ornamental species of Bougainvillea.

It is important to identify the effect of assembly and aggregation on the chirality transfer and energy transmission in supramolecular polymer system, since the unordered aggregation is insufficient to promote luminescence enhancement and chirality transfer, even causing the negative effect. Another key issue is to identify the solvent effect on hierarchically chiral self-assembly. Herein, we designed an AIE-core based building block, tetraphenylpyrazine-cholesterol (TPP-Chol), to explore how the solvent component influences chirality transfer and energy transmission of its aggregates and/or assemblies. Interestingly, the hierarchical assembly behavior was realized in the mixture of MeOH/CHCl3 highly dependent on the MeOH content. During the solvent-directed hierarchical assembly, the morphologic transformations, such as nanoribbons with a width of 150 nm, twisted nanoribbons with helical pitch of 420 nm, nanoribbon clusters, and microflowers with an average diameter of 5.5 µm, were realized with obvious chirality amplification for both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements. The hierarchical assembly of TPP-Chol was also demonstrated by a time-dependent CD test. The work points out the complexity and dynamic of hierarchically chiral self-assembly regulated by the solvent effect, which would be helpful for the development of supramolecular materials with enhanced CPL performance and dynamic chirality.

Background Some studies have shown that transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement within 72 hours of admission improves survival in patients at high risk who present with acute variceal bleeding. However, the role of small-diameter covered TIPS in the secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding is still debatable. Purpose To compare the efficacy of 8-mm TIPS and endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) plus propranolol in the prevention of variceal rebleeding among participants with advanced cirrhosis. Materials and Methods Between June 2015 and December 2018, participants admitted to the hospital for variceal bleeding were considered for enrollment in this randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov). Participants with Child-Pugh class B or C cirrhosis were randomly assigned to receive an 8-mm covered TIPS or EVL and propranolol. The primary end point was recurrent variceal bleeding assessed using Kaplan-Meier curve analysis. Secondary end points included survival and overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) assessed using Kaplan-Meier curve analysis. Results A total of 100 participants were enrolled, with 50 randomly assigned to the EVL plus propranolol group (median age, 54 years; IQR, 45-60 years; 29 male, 21 female) and 50 randomly assigned to the TIPS group (median age, 49 years; IQR, 43-56 years; 32 male, 18 female). The median follow-up period was 43.4 months. In the TIPS group, variceal rebleeding risk was reduced compared with variceal rebleeding risk in the EVL plus propranolol group (hazard ratio [HR], 0.31; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.69; P = .008), but the incidence of overt HE was higher in the TIPS group (30.0% vs 16.0%, P = .03). No differences in survival were observed between the two groups (1-year survival: TIPS, 98.0%; EVL plus propranolol, 92.0%; 3-year survival: TIPS, 94.0%; EVL plus propranolol, 85.7%; HR, 0.52; 95% CI: 0.19, 1.42; P = .22). Conclusion When compared with EVL plus propranolol, 8-mm TIPS led to reduced variceal rebleeding but did not impact overall survival in participants with Child-Pugh class B or C cirrhosis. RESUMEN

Supramolecular chirality is involved not only in biological events such as gene communication, replication, and enzyme catalysis but also in artificial self-assembly systems and aggregated materials. The precise control of supramolecular chirality, and especially supramolecular chirality inversion (SMCI), would deepen the understanding of chiral transfer and regulation in both living systems and artificial self-assembly systems, providing efficient ways to construct advanced chiral materials with an optimum assembly pathway necessary for various functions. In this review, the fundamental principles of SMCI are comprehensively summarized, with a focus on the helical assemblies having opposite handedness or chiroptical properties of the compositions. Thereafter, various SMCI strategies that have been developed for chiral nanostructures and assembled materials are systematically reviewed, and the promising applications of SMCI, including chiroptical switches, chiral recognition, enantiomeric separation, asymmetric catalysis, chiral optoelectronic materials, chiral spin filters, and biomedical uses, are highlighted accordingly. Finally, the scientific challenges and future perspectives for assembling materials with SMCI are also discussed.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is closely related to the pathogenesis of certain diseases, so the detection of trace ATP is of great significance to disease diagnosis and drug development. Graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) have been proven to be a promising platform for the rapid and accurate detection of small molecules, while the Debye shielding limits the sensitive detection in real samples. Here, a three-dimensional wrinkled graphene field-effect transistor (3D WG-FET) biosensor for ultra-sensitive detection of ATP is demonstrated. The lowest detection limit of 3D WG-FET for analyzing ATP is down to 3.01 aM, which is much lower than the reported results. In addition, the 3D WG-FET biosensor shows a good linear electrical response to ATP concentrations in a broad range of detection from 10 aM to 10 pM. Meanwhile, we achieved ultra-sensitive (LOD: 10 aM) and quantitative (range from 10 aM to 100 fM) measurements of ATP in human serum. The 3D WG-FET also exhibits high specificity. This work may provide a novel approach to improve the sensitivity for the detection of ATP in complex biological matrix, showing a broad application value for early clinical diagnosis and food health monitoring. Cancer immunotherapy is revolutionizing oncology. The marriage of nanotechnology and immunotherapy offers a great opportunity to amplify antitumor immune response in a safe and effective manner. Here, electrochemically active Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 can be applied to produce FDA-approved Prussian blue nanoparticles on a large-scale. We present a mitochondria-targeting nanoplatform, MiBaMc, which consists of Prussian blue decorated bacteria membrane fragments having further modifications with chlorin e6 and triphenylphosphine. We find that MiBaMc specifically targets mitochondria and induces amplified photo-damages and immunogenic cell death of tumor cells under light irradiation. The released tumor antigens subsequently promote the maturation of dendritic cells in tumor-draining lymph nodes, eliciting T cell-mediated immune response. In two tumor-bearing mouse models using female mice, MiBaMc triggered phototherapy synergizes with anti-PDL1 blocking antibody for enhanced tumor inhibition. Collectively, the present study demonstrates biological precipitation synthetic strategy of targeted nanoparticles holds great potential for the preparation of microbial membrane-based nanoplatforms to boost antitumor immunity.

KEY MESSAGE: TFL1-like genes of the basal eudicot Platanus acerifolia have conserved roles in maintaining vegetative growth and inhibiting flowering, but may act through distinct regulatory mechanism. Three TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1)-like genes were isolated and characterized from London plane tree (Platanus acerifolia). All genes have conserved genomic organization and characteristic of the phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein (PEBP) family. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis indicated that two genes belong to the TFL1 clade, designated as PlacTFL1a and PlacTFL1b, while another one was grouped in the BFT clade, named as PlacBFT. qRT-PCR analysis showed that all three genes primarily expressed in vegetative phase, but the expression of PlacTFL1a was much higher and wider than that of PlacTFL1b, with the latter only detected at relatively low expression levels in apical and lateral buds in April. PlacBFT was mainly expressed in young stems of adult trees followed by juvenile tissues. Ectopic expression of any TFL1-like gene in Arabidopsis showed phenotypes of delayed or repressed flowering. Furthermore, overexpression of PlacTFL1a gene in petunia also resulted in extremely delayed flowering. In non-flowering 35:PlacTFL1a transgenic petunia plants, the FT-like gene (PhFT) gene was significantly upregulated and AP1 homologues PFG, FBP26 and FBP29 were significantly down-regulated in leaves. Yeast two-hybrid analysis indicated that only weak interactions were detected between PlacTFL1a and PlacFDL, and PlacTFL1a showed no interaction with PhFDL1/2. These results indicated that the TFL1-like genes of Platanus have conserved roles in repressing flowering, but probably via a distinct regulatory mechanism.

BACKGROUND: To explore the risk factors and develop a nomogram in order to predict surgical site infection (SSI) after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for closed pilon fractures (CPF). METHODS: A prospective cohort study with one-year follow-up was carried out in a provincial trauma center. From January 2019 to January 2021, 417 adult patients with CPFs receiving ORIF were enrolled. A Whitney U test or t test, Pearson chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression analyses were gradually used for screening the adjusted factors of SSI. A nomogram model was built to predict the risk of SSI, and the concordance index (C-index), the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used for evaluating the prediction performance and consistency of the nomogram model. The bootstrap method was employed to test the validity of the nomogram. RESULTS: The incidence of SSI after ORIF for CPFs was 7.2% (30/417): 4.1% (17/417) of superficial SSIs and 3.1% (13/417) of deep SSIs. The most common pathogenic bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (36.6%, 11/30). The multivariate analysis showed tourniquet use, longer preoperative stay, lower preoperative albumin (ALB), higher preoperative body mass index (BMI) and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) were independent risk factors of SSI. Additionally, the C-index and bootstrap value of the nomogram model were 0.838 and 0.820, respectively. Finally, the calibration curve indicated that the actual diagnosed SSI had good consistency with the predicted probability, and the DCA showed that the nomogram had clinical value. CONCLUSIONS: Tourniquet use, longer preoperative stay, lower preoperative ALB, higher preoperative BMI and Hs-CRP were five independent risk factors of SSI after closed pilon fractures treated by ORIF. These five predictors are shown on the nomogram, with which we may be able to further prevent the CPS patients from SSI. Trial registration NO 2018-026-1, October /24/2018, prospectively registered. The study was registered in October 24, 2018. The study protocol was designed based on the Declaration of Helsinki and admitted by the Institutional Review Board. The ethics committee approved the study on factors related to fracture healing in orthopedic surgery. Data analyzed in the present study were acquired from the patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation from January 2019 to January 2021.

The study of dynamic supramolecular chirality inversion (SMCI) not only helps to deepen the understanding of chiral transfer and amplification in both living organizations and artificially chemical self-assembly systems but also is useful for the development of smart chiral nanomaterials. However, it is still challenging to achieve the dynamic SMCI of the self-aggregation of metal-organic supramolecular polymers with great potential in asymmetric synthesis, chiroptical switches, and circular polarized luminescence. Here, we successfully developed a hierarchical coassembly system based on the mPAzPCC and various metal ions with effective chirality transfer and temporal-controlled SMCI. Due to the dynamic self-assembly and hierarchical chirality transfer of the Ag+/mPAzPCC complex driven by metallophilic interaction and coordination, morphological transition with nanoribbons, helical nanoribbons, and chiral nanotubules was successively obtained. Interestingly, the SMCI of chiral nanoaggregates was precisely regulated by solvents and metal ions in the Cu2+/mPAzPCC and Mn2+/mPAzPCC system. Besides, temporal-controlled dynamic SMCI switching from helix to bundled helix was clearly revealed in the aggregation of Cu2+/mPAzPCC, Mn2+/mPAzPCC, and Bi3+/mPAzPCC systems. This work provides a metallophilic interaction-mediated helical assembly pathway to dynamically modulate the chirality of metal-organic complex-based assemblies and deepen the understanding of the hierarchically dynamic self-assembly process, which would be of great potential in metal ion-mediated supramolecular asymmetric catalysis and bioinspired chiral sensing.

Himalayan onion (Allium wallichii) is a perennial bulbous herb with high ornamental value and has long been used as traditional medicines in Nepal and China because of the anti-cancer and anti-microbial activities. Wild Allium wallichii features different flower colors, including purple, pink, deep purple and white. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of color formation during A. wallichii flower development stages due to the lack of optimal reference genes. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is a powerful tool for quantifying expression levels of target genes. The accuracy of qRT-PCR analyses is largely dependent on the identification of stable reference genes for data normalization. The stability of reference gene expression may vary with plant species and environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to select stable reference genes for qRT-PCR analyses of target genes at flower development stages, in different flower colors and organs for Allium wallichii. The CDSs of eight potential reference genes (TUB2, ACT1, GAPC, EF1α, UBQ, UBC, SAND and CYP1) were cloned and their stability was evaluated by four programs (Delta Ct, geNorm, NormFinder and BestKeeper), and the results were further integrated into a comprehensive rank by RefFinder. The results showed that TUB2 and GAPC were the most stable two reference genes at different developmental stages of purple- and white-flower genotypes and across all samples. UBC and TUB2 expression was stable at different developmental stages of purple flowers. CYP1 and TUB2 were stably expressed at different developmental stages of white flowers. GAPC and SAND showed the highest rankings in different flower colors. TUB2 and EF1α performed the best in different tissues. ACT1 was the least stable gene in all tested samples. Moreover, DIHYDROFLAVONOL-4-REDUCTASE (DFR) gene that involved in anthocyanin synthesis was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the selected candidates. This study identified the first set of suitable reference genes for qRT-PCR analyses, which will lay the foundation for gene function study in A. wallichii.

Purpose: The key point of eyelid margin reconstruction is to keep both the support function and aesthetic appearance. The eyelid's complex anatomical structures make eyelid margin reconstruction demanding. Eyelid margin defects are conventionally classified by their width relative to the eyelid width: small, medium, or large. In this study, we introduce a reconstruction method for small to medium defects. Patients and Methods: We conducted a single-center case series of patients from the practice of a single experienced plastic surgeon at a tertiary center. We included consecutive outpatients from 2014 to 2021. The inclusion criteria were (1) eyelid margin mass and (2) willingness to receive eyelid margin reconstruction by the reported method. The exclusion criteria were (1) eyelid margin mass involving most or all of the tarsus and (2) less than one year of follow-up. Patients were followed up face to face or online. Patients' demographics, clinical characteristics and outcomes, and satisfaction were collected. The clinical outcomes were assessed and scored by two plastic surgeons. Procedure: We reconstructed the anterior lamella with an advancement musculocutaneous flap and repaired the posterior lamella with a specially designed advancement tarsoconjunctival flap, of which a piece of tarsus was shaved and the corresponding remnant conjunctiva was bent forward to cover the tarsus edge to avoid ocular injury. Results: We included 24 patients (25 lesions). Almost all patients had eyelash discontinuity. One patient presented slight notching of the lower eyelid margin. The other patients reported no complications or recurrence. The average outcome score was 1.23±0.69, indicating that our method was excellent. All patients were very satisfied with the surgery. The average follow-up time was 5.75 years. Conclusion: We report a reconstruction method for small to medium eyelid margin defects and a novel design for preventing ocular injury, which is an especially good option for transverse defects.

Light and hydrodynamic force are important physical factors affecting growth of Microcystis. The most recent study found that green light has good effect in inhibiting growth of Microcystis. To understand the effect of mixing modes on Microcystis under the green light, we investigated the effects of continuous mixing and intermittent mixing on the abundance of Microcystis in Taihu Lake under field conditions. The study results found that abundance of Microcystis in control, intermittent mixing group, and continuous mixing group decreased 76.62%, 40.36%, and 95.18% on day 7 compared with that on day 1 in this experiment. At the end of the experiment, abundance percentages of diatoms and green algae to total phytoplankton abundance were 1.57% and 0.48% in control, 2.32% and 0.67% in intermittent mixing group, and 22.47% and 20.27% in continuous mixing group. The results indicated that continuous mixing favored the removal of Microcystis under green light conditions and was helpful for the growth of green algae and diatoms. The results provide a new approach for the control of Microcystis blooms.

RESUMEN

Dynamic covalent polymers, composed of dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs), have received increasing attention in the last decade due to their adaptive and reversible nature compared with common covalent linked polymers. Incorporating the DCBs into the polymeric material endows it with advanced performance including self-healing, shape memory property, and so forth. However, the emissive ability of such dynamic covalent polymeric materials has been rarely reviewed. Herein, this review has summarized DCBs-based emissive polymeric materials which are classified according to the different types of DCBs, including imine bond, acylhydrazone bond, boronic ester bond, dynamic C-C bond, as well as the reversible bonds based on Diels-Alder reaction and transesterification. The mechanism of chemical reactions and various stimuli-responsive behaviors of DCBs are introduced, followed by typical emissive polymers resulting from these DCBs. By taking advantage of the reversible nature of DCBs under chemical/physical stimuli, the constructed emissive polymeric materials show controllable and switchable emission. Finally, challenges and future trends in this field are briefly discussed in this review.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) usually develops based on acute decompensation (AD) of cirrhosis and is characterized by intense systemic inflammation, multiple organ failure, and high short-term mortality. Validated biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of ACLF remain to be clarified. Metabolomics is an emerging method used to measure low-molecular-weight metabolites and is currently frequently implemented to understand pathophysiological processes involved in disease progression, as well as to search for new diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers of various disorders. The characterization of metabolites in ACLF has recently been described via metabolomics. The role of metabolites in the pathogenesis of ACLF deserves further investigation and improvement and could be the basis for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In this review, we focused on the contributions of metabolomics on uncovering metabolic profiles in patients with ACLF, the key metabolic pathways that are involved in the progression of ACLF, and the potential metabolite-associated therapeutic targets for ACLF.
